Riddle Me Mail - the December edition

And the Woodpecker Appears
Picture
In my letter I mentioned hearing a woodpecker in the neighborhood. Well, it's funny how sometimes you think about something and it appears. Maybe we see it because we're more aware.

I went to the mall (I know, crazy, this time of year), but it was to pick up my new glasses. I scooted in and out using the lesser known access road that loops around behind the mall. There is a wooded area and swamp nearby.

As I came around the curve, there were a few trees close to the road, and there it was. A pileated woodpecker. The kind that looks like Woody Woodpecker. And geez, they're big!

It had a bright red cap on top of it's head, and it was peck, peck, pecking, and the wood chips were flying.

I want to do an "I Write Letters to Say ... "entry on that one, but held off until I could tell you first about my discovery.

The photograph is from Shutterstock, and I liked it because if you look closely on the lower right, I think there's a wood chip in the air

The Ground is Frozen and It's Snowing, Again
This is the view out the back door during our first storm. We've had 3 storms since I wrote the December letter.
