More on tops ... videos and acorns ...

I have a little wooden box that I keep my Jacks in. It sits on a shelf in the bookcase where I have lots of other trinkets; things like a small wooden top, a brass sundial, sea glass, rocks, and driftwood.

After watching a video (see below) where acorns were used as tops, I collected some to experiment. The biggest challenge was finding acorns with a long enough stem to pinch and spin. But it works! I've used the acorn caps for whistles, but never tried spinning acorns!

VIDEOS of Tops!
When I started looking into tops, I didn't realize how popular they are around the world. I found two videos. This first one is called, "Tops" and the second is from a segment on the Martha Stewart program. Both have video of spinning tops and flying tops.

There are tops that move through mazes, a top with wings, a thumbtack top, and of course some jacks, too.

More Things that Spin: the earth, mixer attachments, clothes dryer, ferris wheel, weathervane,
