Riddle Me Mail - October
[ A behind-the-scenes look and some things discovered along the way. ]
Favorite Recipes
The older version of the Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book (on the right) was my first cookbook. When I mentioned to my husband it was falling apart, he bought me a new version. It's bigger and has a lot of new recipes, but there were a few favorites missing from the older version (like Pfeffernusse cookies), so I keep both. Pfeffernusse are small spice cookies rolled in confectioner's sugar. I make them for the holidays, especially for my brother who really likes them. Click here or on the cookbooks to get the recipe for Pfeffernusse cookies. |
Comfort Food
Years ago a friend asked a favor. Her mother was not well, wasn't eating, and my friend thought if there was anything that she might go for it would be her own chicken soup. "Would you make my mother's recipe?" she asked. Of course. Phone in one hand, pencil in the other, I scribbled notes on a slip of paper (shown here). Though nothing like any chicken soup I'd ever had or made (no carrots, no celery, no onion), it's one of my favorite recipes. Served with grated Parmesan cheese, it is deliciously comforting. |
Collecting Recipes
In addition to cookbooks, I have a notebook filled with shared recipes from friends and family, and others I've discovered online. Lots of them are splattered with notes about adjustments and in this case, ones we liked. |
Production: Experiments and Proofing
After I finished the watercolor painting of the apple branch, I took it outside to photograph. I was experimenting and noticed there was shade in the corner of the yard. I loved how it looked on the painting and wanted to replicate it but just couldn't get the colors or light balance right. But it's still one of my favorites. Note: you may see that Cripps is on this panel but not the final - Cripps is a cultivar of apples, not a type of apple. Pink Lady a Cripps brand (and was already on the panel), so I replaced it with Cameo. Quizzical Answers
